Running the Soulcalibur Legends ROM through Dolphin reveals a Wii spin-off with no interest in staying inside a fighting ring. The RVZ disc image opens a campaign where Siegfried moves through mansion corridors, mountain trails, ships, and military camps. A gate closes, several soldiers or monsters rush in, and the route remains blocked until the room is cleared. It is closer to a short mission-based brawler than the one-on-one series that carries its name.

The story occupies the gap between Soul Edge and the first Soulcalibur. Siegfried has already taken the cursed sword, but his transformation into Nightmare is still ahead of him. The Masked Emperor sends him across Europe and Asia to recover fragments of Soul Edge during a war with Sultan Barbaros. Familiar warriors gradually join the journey, while Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia appears as the guest character.

One health bar falls, another fighter takes over

Many missions begin by asking for two characters. Only one appears on the field; the other waits in reserve with a separate health bar. A wounded Siegfried can leave the fight and let Ivy, Taki, or another partner finish the route. The reserve character never follows under AI control. Swapping is mainly a way to protect a wounded fighter and keep the mission alive.

There are seven playable characters: Siegfried, Ivy, Sophitia, Taki, Mitsurugi, Astaroth Alpha and Lloyd. A crowd exposes the difference between their weapons. Siegfried’s greatsword can cover a broad arc, Ivy attacks across more space with her segmented blade, and Lloyd’s paired swords favor a quicker rhythm.

The usual horizontal, vertical, and thrust-based ideas survive, but the Wii Remote turns them into gestures. The Nunchuk moves the fighter and handles evasive motions; Z guards, B jumps, and C activates Spirit Charge when enough gauge energy is available. An emulated Wii Remote in Dolphin needs the Nunchuk extension and those swing directions assigned before the controls make sense. Wild shaking queues motions while the character is still attacking, so some inputs never reach the screen. Short, deliberate swings register more predictably. Once a cut lands, the player can guard or aim the next gesture instead of feeding commands into an unfinished animation.

The disc image needs less preparation than the controller profile. Dolphin reads RVZ directly, so an ISO conversion is unnecessary. If the download is inside a ZIP archive, extract it once and select the resulting .rvz file. Dolphin lists the game as playable, but its compatibility page records a possible black screen at startup. Turning off “Store XFB Copies to Texture Only” in the graphics settings addresses that specific launch problem.

The route is not made entirely of locked combat rooms. A rope may lower a bridge, statues and switches open sealed paths, and narrow passages contain arrows, floor blades or rolling boulders. Breakable objects sometimes hide Blade Hearts that increase weapon power for the current mission. Once the route ends, combo output, damage, and completion speed affect the result bonus; higher titles are also tied to additional weapon unlocks.

Missions often end before the motion combat wears out its welcome. The repetition becomes harder to miss over a longer session. A later quest may reverse a route or replace its objective without making the surroundings new. The close camera is less forgiving. In a cramped corridor, an enemy or projectile can enter from the edge of the screen before there is enough room to react. Soulcalibur Legends never develops the precision of a mainline series duel.

The main journey remains single-player. Separate split-screen missions support two-player co-op or competitive objectives, with each player using a Wii Remote and Nunchuk setup or an equivalent emulated profile. Story progress unlocks these extras, but Siegfried’s full campaign never becomes cooperative.
