Excitebike ROM is the European NES release in .nes format, sized at only 16.7 KB for compatible Nintendo emulators. The game looks simple at first, with Selection A running solo and Selection B adding computer riders. A top-three finish opens the championship race. Easy rule. The track rarely cooperates.
That 16.7 KB File Still Runs At PAL Speed
The small file loads quickly in most NES emulators, though region timing is worth checking. This European build may run at PAL speed instead of the quicker NTSC pace. And that difference is noticeable once the jumps start arriving closer together.
The B Button Can Ruin A Clean Lap
The A button handles normal acceleration, while B activates the faster turbo. Holding turbo too long overheats the engine and stops the bike until it cools. Arrow markers lower the heat immediately. Miss one, and a good qualifying run can fall apart in seconds.

A Crooked Landing Eats Your Speed
Lane changes use the directional pad, while airborne movement adjusts the rider’s angle. Landing on both wheels keeps the bike moving. A bad angle causes a slowdown or throws the rider onto the dirt. Later tracks add gaps, rough patches, and narrow two-lane sections. Nasty little squeeze.
Nineteen Pieces Can Build A Mean Track
Design Mode includes 19 obstacle types for custom courses with jumps, rough ground, and awkward landing spots. The Famicom version could save tracks through the Famicom Data Recorder. That cassette accessory stayed in Japan, so saving a custom course required a very specific setup.
