Alola is still easy to love. Pokémon Sun on Nintendo 3DS looks even better in Citra on PC or Android. With a decrypted Pokémon Sun ROM in CIA or 3DS format you get clean visuals, quick loads, and a setup that takes minutes, not hours.

Tip: Choose CIA if you prefer installing via “File → Install CIA…”. Choose 3DS for simple drag-and-drop.

Citra on PC

  1. Install the current Citra Nightly (or Canary for newer changes).
  2. Open the game: File → Load File for .3DS, or File → Install CIA… for .CIA, then launch it from your library.
  3. Keep Hardware Renderer on and raise Internal Resolution to 3× or 4× if your GPU allows it.
  4. In System, enable New 3DS mode for smoother menus and battles.
  5. Accurate Multiplication sharpens edges; turn it off on older iGPUs if frames dip. Use VSync if you notice tearing. A 30 FPS cap keeps pacing steady on modest hardware.

Citra on Android

  1. Install the latest official app and allow storage access when prompted.
  2. Place the decrypted ROM somewhere obvious (e.g., Downloads/Games/3DS).
  3. Add that folder inside Citra, tap Pokémon Sun, and play.
  4. Start at resolution on mid-range phones, on older devices, and on flagships.
  5. Keep Hardware Shader on. If audio crackles or the device heats up, cap FPS at 30 and drop resolution one step.

Performance and visuals

  • Raising internal resolution gives the biggest upgrade.
  • Shader cache warms during the first minutes; early micro-stutter fades as you play.
  • On laptops, use a performance power plan to avoid throttling.
  • A wired or Bluetooth controller helps for long sessions; keyboard is fine for casual runs.

Quick fixes

  • Black screen on boot: the dump is still encrypted. Use a decrypted CIA/3DS.
  • CIA opened like a file and won’t save: install via “File → Install CIA…” and launch from the title list.
  • Save not detected: reinstall the CIA and open it from Citra’s library instead of a direct path.
  • Menus feel heavy: disable Accurate Multiplication or lower internal resolution.
  • Micro-stutter on Android: enable the FPS limiter, close background apps, keep at least 10% free storage.

Formats and regions

CIA installs into Citra and keeps libraries tidy, which helps if you plan to add updates or DLC later. The 3DS format is great for quick testing and drag-and-drop sessions. Both play the same once decrypted. Pick the region that suits your language; USA and EUR are the most common.

Why Sun still works today

Island trials keep the pace fresh compared with classic Gyms. Totem encounters and Z-Moves add bite to the midgame. At 3×–4× resolution, Alola’s warm palette finally looks the way you remember it—cleaner and sharper on a big display.
